May at Upthorpe Lodges

May is upon us, and what a glorious month it is in Suffolk. We’re lucky to have some of the driest and warmest weather in the country and our guests inevitably venture outdoors, not just to enjoy the hot tub! Our gardens are looking especially colourful and for those who like nothing but to immerse themselves in natural beauty, our local area has plenty to offer.

Local Gardens

Ickworth House near Bury St Edmunds is well worth a visit, and not just for the splendid house itself. The immaculate lawns show the house to its best, and the Italianate gardens give an aura of peacefulness and formality. The extensive woodlands are laid out with enjoyable walks and vistas providing ideal picnic spots and wildlife observation points. On the north-west side of Buy St Edmunds at West Stow you’ll find a paradise-like garden at Fuller’s Mill. These are a plant-lovers heaven, with many unusual varieties amongst the riverside ponds, banks and woodland. Springtime is especially rewarding as spring bulbs overlap with herbaceous perennials, Clematis, and other flowering shrubs.

Walking Landscapes

We’re lucky to have a wide choice of footpaths and tracks leading from our lodges. Adventurous walkers can make their way eastwards to nearby Walsham le Willows where timber-framed cottages (some painted in the traditional ‘Suffolk pink’) adorn the high street and where you can pop in at Rolfe’s for the most delicious picnic food. There is a varied circular walk which takes in some WWII action sites and the meandering river which runs through part of the main street. Another choice of country walk can take you to the picturesque village of Bardwell, where walkers can be rewarded with a choice of three places to find lunch or just a coffee.

Maps and Guides

Even with the abilities of mobile phones and satnav, there’s something more satisfying about finding your way with good old fashioned maps and guides. In each of our lodges, visitors will find up to date ordnance survey maps, and a number of local guides to the area detailing places of interest, the best cafes, pubs and restaurants, and local town and city maps.
